A Look at the Lego Company History

In 1932, carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen founded his company in Billund, Denmark with the purpose of encouraging imaginative play and ingenuity in children. He started by making stepladders. He changed his focus to the production of toys, and he established one of the most beloved brands in the history of the world.

Christiansen was a nimble thinker and quick to embrace new materials and technologies. In 1947, he became the first company in the world to acquire an injection molding machine made of plastic that greatly expanded the range and capabilities of Lego products. The machine allowed him to experiment and create the Lego brick. The bricks came with pegs at the top and hollow bottoms that interlocked with each other, allowing children to create intricate structures that are far greater than the possibilities of wooden blocks of previous generations.

The 1950s was a time of expansion for the business. Godtfred Kirk Christiansen’s daughter Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen joined the managerial staff and began to modernize the company’s manufacturing techniques. This expansion was accompanied by the launch of a dollhouse line and furniture for girls, and also the first Minifigures as individual figures. In 1979, the company widened its product line to include sets featuring astronaut minifigures and rockets. They also introduced lunar rovers, spaceships and spaceships.

In 1990, the company released three Model Team sets that were designed for advanced builders. These sets included small parts such as axles, gears and levers, and provided the kind of realism and accuracy that was unparalleled in the Lego series at the time.
